Program/Service Notes
The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vermilion County Program matches children (ages 5-14) with carefully screened volunteers who serve as role models, mentors and friends. Goals are set for each match and professional caseworkers provide ongoing support and supervision. Training, group activities, and counseling available to program participants. They can be matched in the community-based or school-based program. A Big Brother or Big Sister is not a substitute parent, nor a baby sitter, but a friend. Activities involved are: fishing, watching movies, bicycling in the park, just sitting and talking, baking cookies, going to basketball game, etc. The children as well as volunteers come from all walks of life, and demonstrate the diversity of their communities. The staff will carefully evaluate prospective volunteers, basing the match on the needs of the child and the interest of the volunteer. Once a match is made, the agency's caseworkers are there to provide advice, and the support necessary to help the match grow and mature. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vermilion County also operates the Young Women Aware and Young Men Aware program through a partnership with Provena United Samaritans Medical Foundation and District 118. The program works with girls and boys in junior high and high school to help them learn about the issues of young women and men by involving them in educational events, volunteer activities and new opportunities.
