Program/Service Notes

Experience Works is a federally funded Community Service Training & Employment Program for persons 55 and over who qualify. To find out if you are eligible to participate in the SCSEP, call Rose at 442-0236. Experience Works staff will interview you to determine your eligibility. If you are eligible, we will match your interests and skills with community service training assignment at an agency located close to where you live. The training assignment is designed to help you upgrade your skills, learn new skills, and ultimately find employment. For example, you may care for your children or the elderly, tutor students, operate computers, landscape public grounds, teach skilled trades and crafts, repair homes or machinery, or work as a sales-person, clerk, or receptionist. Your training assignment will be approximately 20 hours per week. While you are on your assignment, you will be paid the minimum wage for the hours you train. As you progress in your training assignment, Experience Works staff will help you turn your newly acquired skills and experience into a full-time or part-time job off the program. You may also receive additional education, training, and work experience through supplemental programs offered by Experience Works. In every case, we develop a customized training plan designed to help you meet your goal of regular employment. Experience Works (formerly Green Thumb) began in 1965 as a small demonstration project to help older, low income retired farmers supplement their income while providing important services to their local communities. The program evolved over the years into the SENIOR COMMUNITY SERVICE EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (SCSEP), which is widely recognized as one of the most successful federal employment programs and the only initiative focused on meeting the training and employment needs of a rapidly growing older population. Today, Experience Works operates the SCSEP in 38 states and Puerto Rico, and other Experience Works' programs touch older workers in all 50 states.
