Program/Service Notes
The MDA offers the following services: 1. Clinics: Patients receive diagnosis and follow-up care from specialists in neuromuscular disease. The MDA also offers direct services, including assistance with purchase and repair of wheelchairs, recreation at MDA summer camps and selected transportation assistance. 2. Research: MDA supports more research on neuromuscular diseases than any other private sector organization in the world, seeking causes of, and cures and treatments for 40 neuromuscular disorders. 3. Education: MDA conducts far-reaching educational programs for the public and for medical professionals. The Association also produces and distributes a wide variety of print and audiovisual materials. In addition, MDA sponsors scientific symposia and other meetings of neuromuscular specialists. The MD clinic for this area is Carle Foundation Hospital. In addition to the services outlined above, the local chapter offers family counseling to the families of MD patients. The only requirement for receiving an evaluation at a MDA clinic is the written recommendation of a physician in whose judgment a person may have one of the neuromuscular diseases covered by the Association's medical services program. A physician's statement of diagnosis must be filed with the Association for the person to receive the MDA services. The initial diagnostic examination is a singular exception to this policy. A separate MDA clinic physician's prescription is required for each service. An MDA clinic physician's statement of physical condition, rather than a prescription, is needed for attendance at an MDA-sponsored camp. Following is a listing of the neuromuscular diseases covered: Muscular Dystrophies: Duchenne MD Becker MD Emery-Dreifuss MD Limb-Girdle MD Facioscapulohumeral MD Myotonic Dystrophy Oculopharyngeal MD Distal MD Congenital MD Motor Neuron Diseases: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) Infantile Progressive Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 Intermediate Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 Juvenile Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 3 Adult Spinal Muscular Atrophy Inflamatory Myopaties: Dermatomyositis Polymyosities Diseases of the Neuromuscular Junction: Myasthenia Gravis Lambert-Eaton Syndrome Myopathies due to Endocrine abnormalities: Hyperthyroid Myopathy Hypothyroid Myopathy Diseases of the Peripheral Nerve: Peroneal Muscular Atrophy Friedreich's Ataxia Dejerine-Sottas Disease Other Myopathies Myotonia Congenita Paramyotonia Congenita Central Core Disease Nemaline Myopathy Myotubular Myopathy Periodic Paralysis Metabolic Diseases of Muscle: Phosphorylase Deficiency Acid Maltase Deficiency Phosphofructokinase Deficiency Debrancher Enzyme Deficiency Mitochondrial Myopathy Carnitine Deficiency Carnitine Palmityl Transferase Deficiency Phosphoglycerate Kinase Deficiency Phosphoglucerate Mutase Deficiency Lactate Dehydrogenase Deficiency Myoadenylate Deaminase Deficiency It is the policy of MDA to assist with payment only for those services authorized in its program that are not covered by private or public insurance plans or other community resources. No services or durable medical equipment may be ordered directly by persons served or by their families if payment by MDA is desired. The following diagnostic procedures are offered by the MDA clinics: 1. Clinical Examination 2. Family History 3. Electromyogram (EMG) 4. Serum Enzyme Tests 5. Genetic tests 6. Muscle Biopsy
