Program/Service Notes

Oncology, Hematology and Radiation Therapy services offered. Provena United Samaritans Medical Center provides the only cancer services in the Vermilion County area that offer full-time, comprehensive radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and medical oncology under one roof. Since it opened in 1981, the Regional Cancer Center has established itself as a leader in cancer education, management, and therapy for East Central Illinois and Western Indiana. Cancer Specialists The physicians from the Cancer Center also provide 24-hour services for patients who are hospitalized at Provena United Samaritans. They include Jo-Mel S. Labayog, M.D., Cancer Center medical director, and Jaidev C. Soni, M.D. These physicians assure that the very best cancer care will continue for patients even when they are hospitalized. The Cancer Center is dedicated to giving cancer patients the opportunity to receive the most effective treatment with the convenience of staying close to home and loved ones. The Cancer Center is staffed by three chemotherapy-certified registered nurses, three radiation therapists, and office personnel, who are dedicated to the overall management of the patient’s care. Radiation Therapy The Cancer Center is committed to providing state of the art technology for patients diagnosed with cancer and who need treatment. In order to keep pace with new and innovative cancer treatment, the center has improved its radiation therapy department with a new, three-dimensional upgrade of the linear accelerator. The linear accelerator treats cancer with an accurate beam of radiation; this new upgrade allows for a better, safer, and more accurate form of radiation treatment with fewer side effects. Chemotherapy The Cancer Center continues to provide up-to-date treatment and management options with the newest types of chemotherapy medications. The nurses here provide highly skilled chemotherapy administration, with more then 70 combined years of nursing experience. Certain cancer patients with difficult diseases have the opportunity to enroll in national cancer clinical trials. Renovations and additions were recently made to the Cancer Center to create a larger, more comfortable chemotherapy administration area. Patients can relax comfortably and enjoy the wooded scenery while receiving their treatments. The Regional Cancer Center is a member of the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, and an affiliate of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB).
