SERVICES OFFERED: ELEMENTARY CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: The purpose of the program is to support an organized sequence of career development learning activities for students k-8 encompassing self-knowledge, educational and occupational exploration and career planning. The outcome of the program is for all students by the end of the 8th grade to be able to identify preliminary career goals and to choose an appropriate career pathway towards the attainment of their goals. CAREER AWARENESS: This program is designed to provide 8th grade students with the opportunity to interact with small business, experience real life work situations utilizing the knowledge gained in the classroom, and increase awareness of the changing global market and the necessity for adaptability to the market. LEARN TO EARN CAREER DAYS: This activity allows 8th graders to make choices about high school classes based upon the opportunity to explore career and technical programs through hands-on experiences at VOTEC. CAREER INTEREST INVENTORIES: Career Cruising is designed to introduce students to the idea of career and technical planning, provide a broad range of careers to think about and suggest ways to get additional information about careers. CAREER AWARENESS AND PLACEMENT SERVICES: Services provided are: * Career information - motivational career related posters & presentations regarding career choices. * Business Contacts - Ongoing business contacts are made to collect referrals for cooperative education programs; job shadowing experiences. * Job Fairs/Career Days/Job Service Tours - Includes planning, coordination and assistance of local job fairs and career days. * Presentations - Available upon request. The following topics are available: employability and workplace skills, interview techniques, and preparing resumes. STUDENT SERVICES COMMITTEE: VVEDS coordinates staff development activities for local guidance counselors and related project staff to provide current labor market and career and technical information. Committee members learn about local business needs and employment opportunities for students. The committee meetings provide an opportunity for sharing program information and requirements and counseling concerns. STAFF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES: Perkins funds provide financial support for career and technical instructors and guidance counselors to attend local, state and national inservice activities. PROGRAM IMPROVEMENT GRANT: The funds from this grant are to be used to support improvement in any state-approved career and technical education program. In planning, schools should consider their career and technical program instructional equipment, staff development and integration of academic and vocational-technical program needs. TECH PREP YOUTH APPRENTICESHIPS: This program provides Tech Prep Youth Apprenticeship opportunities for students during the junior and senior years in high school and continues through at least a community college degree. The program combines worksite-based learning and school-based learning; it requires business-education partnerships and student/parent commitment. Types of apprenticeships available are: accounting, banking, consumer services management, and manufacturing technology. STUDENT FOLLOW-UP: Student data regarding educational and employment progress after high school is collected to determine if the student continued education or entered employment in an area related to their high school career and technical training. JOB SHADOWING: VVEDS coordinates a full day job shadowing experience for each 10th grade student in the system. The activity places students in local businesses related to the student's stated career choice. CAREER EXPO: This one day event allows each 9th grade student in the system to meet with local businesses and to hear presentations about career pathways.
