The Lincoln's Challenge Academy program is a 17 month, two phase program design to teach youth to: * lead others * learn self-discipline * develop skills that will help them get a job * work toward a GED * be eligible for up to a $2,200 stipend and a $1,000 scholarship The Academy begins with the Residential Phase at the Rantoul, Illinois. For 5 months the youth lives, works and studies on-site with other 16-19 year olds. They will practice self-discipline, responsibility and leadership skills, and study for the GED. During the next 12 months, the Post-Residential Phase, the youth will return to their own communities for additional training and education. A local mentor will provide assistance as the youth attends a junior or four year college, attend a technical school or begin an entry level job in an area business. The program includes: * physical training * community service * classroom and computer training * life skills ranging from team work to planning a budget Male and female high school dropout between the ages of 16 and 18 are eligible for the Academy. Must be a resident of Illinois and a US citizen or legal resident. Must be free of any serious legal trouble and can't be involved with drugs. Will have to pass a medical screening during the first week of the Academy. Must want to voluntarily complete the Academy. Volunteer duties: * Be a mentor to a Academy graduate * Make at least 2 phone and 2 in - person contacts - 2 phone & 2 face to face contacts * Communicate status of graduate to case manager Volunteer requirements: * Age 21 & up * Attend mentor training (4 hours) * Commit to 12 month interaction * Must be an IL resident and a citizen or legal resident of the USA * Complete a formal and an informal interview * Must be employed at least part time, a student, or retired * Must go through a background investigation How to become a volunteer: * Autumn Sparling at 217-892-1334
