Program/Service Notes

Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network Established in 1986, Gift of Hope is the federally designated not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) dedicated to coordinating organ and tissue donation in the northern three-quarters of Illinois and northwest Indiana. Working with the 183 hospitals it serves, as well as local and national donation and transplant communities, Gift of Hope continually works to develop effective, government-regulated systems to help increase the number of donated organs available for transplant. Gift of Hope staff works with and educates medical professionals on all aspects of donation, from the appropriate identification and timing for referrals of potential donors to the medical management of donors and the recovery surgery. For families of donors, Gift of Hope provides information on the donation process, placement of organs and tissues recovered and the progress of recipients, as well as follow-up support and programs. Gift of Hope also coordinates programs to educate the more than 11.3 million people in its service region about organ and tissue donation. Our mission is simply to save and enhance the lives of as many people as possible through organ and tissue donation. We accomplish our mission by: Discussing donation with family members of potential donors Evaluating potential donors for medical suitability Coordinating the organ and tissue procurement processes Educating healthcare professionals about the donation process Offering support to families of organ and tissue donors Providing the more than 11.3 million residents in our service area with information about donation Assisting hospitals with the development of policies and procedures for donation We work with 183 hospitals in our service area to provide families with the option of organ and tissue donation. We also work with transplant centers and other OPOs through the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to provide lifesaving organs to the patients awaiting them.
